What are stem cells?
Stem cells are perhaps nature’s best kept secret. These cells, which are found in humans and other organisms, have the ability to divide and multiply. Therefore they form various structures such as cartilage and bone. These can be used for stem cell therapy, for example for cartilage degeneration of the knee.
Stem cell therapy
Adult stem cells (as opposed to the controversial embryonic cells ) are generally taken from the patient’s own bone marrow. This prevents the possibility of infection or rejection. It is currently being trialled worldwide. So we will watch this space to see how things develop.
